Education

When young children start school, they bring with them considerable knowledge and experience. In the child's mind, this is not separated into different subject areas. At the Lewes New School, our approach to teaching and learning provides a means of building on such experiences and for allowing children to continue to learn in an integrated way.

Within the broad framework of whole school topics, teachers create opportunities for the curriculum to be shaped by the children's curiosity and imagination. The sharing of ideas across the school, through assemblies and workshops, provides important opportunities for the children to be inspired by each other. Teachers observe and document the children's learning with an attention to detail that enables them to identify ideas that will match individual needs and interests.

The school's educational philosophy is inspired by our understanding of each child's natural capacity to learn. A belief in the importance of playful, autonomous and creative enquiry is what largely defines the style of our teaching and learning.

Reference to the National Curriculum and the application of rigorous systems for assessing the children's learning, ensure that children acquire the academic and intellectual skills that will be essential for achieving continued success.
