Emotional Intelligence
|
Lewes New School is committed to nurturing Emotional Intelligence as an integral part of the school's ethos. We understand the importance of this aspect of the children's education in equipping them with skills such as peaceful conflict resolution, problem solving, self-motivation, empathy, emotional honesty and self-discipline. We also consider these skills to be the building blocks of academic achievement.
We recognise the role the teachers play as models for the children, and try to model the communications skills we teach.
The school uses the Teacher Effectiveness Training model designed by Dr Thomas Gordon as the basis for respectful communication within the school, and we use its principles to guide the PSE (personal and social education) curriculum as well as the overall discipline and behaviour policy at the school.
Teachers are trained in the TET model of communication, and the school also runs Parent Effectiveness Training courses for parents.
Our aim is to encourage self-discipline and to share responsibility for the peace and happiness of our community.

We help the children to develop the habits of resolving their own conflicts peacefully, by facilitating conflict resolution whereby the children decide on a mutually acceptable situation.
When there is challenging behaviour, our aim is to help the child to understand the effects of their actions, and to learn to modify their own behaviour appropriately, by means of using 'I-messages'.
When problems arise, our aim is to help children to solve their own problems as much as possible, through skills such as 'Active Listening'.
As the children move up through the school, they are encouraged to take more responsibility for the smooth running of their community through specific Circle Times, for example teachers and children together devising a Code of Conduct for their class.
Through our methods we hope to provide children with emotional and relationship skills that will serve them for life.
