Literacy
|
Literacy is experienced through the class projects and integrates with all other curriculum areas. Children are given opportunities to learn in purposeful and meaningful contexts.
Writing
Throughout the school children are given opportunities to witness teachers modelling the processes of reading and writing in meaningful contexts where the audience and purpose is clear. It is through these processes that skills such as phonics, punctuation etc are learnt. Children are given daily opportunities to write independently. Children are encouraged to write for a range of purposes and audiences (letters, pamphlets, jokes, fiction, research, poetry, reviews, articles, web pages etc). Time is also set aside each week for children to practise handwriting and spelling skills.

Reading
A good range of ‘real books’ (as opposed to reading schemes) is made available in every classroom with children encouraged to make their own choices about what they would like to read. Whole class reading times take place each day after lunch. In every class children meet in small groups to share their reading experience. During these meetings children exchange ideas about books, recommend texts to each other and have an opportunity to read an extract from a book they are enjoying. All children are actively encouraged to read regularly at home.
