Founded by forward-thinking parents and educators in 2000, the school – while small in size – has grown in reputation and ambition to provide a real alternative to mainstream education.

You’ll find us nestled in the peaceful Pells area of Lewes, just a stone’s throw from a popular lido and a short walk to the historic, vibrant town or to the South Downs. We make the most of this wonderful setting and venture out on trips and visits whenever we can.

We’re a small, friendly school so we get to know everyone really well.

We have developed an approach we call ‘human-centred education’ because it respects the person as a whole and holds a deep respect for the human being at the heart of school life.

Our children are trusted to co-create a curriculum inspired by their own curiosity and imagination and informed by the skills they need to flourish as lifelong learners and purposeful members of their communities.

We take the time to listen to each child, celebrate their uniqueness and offer them the time and space to discover their individual nature and talents. Free from the pressures of statutory testing, children experience deeper understanding and develop the skills they need to thrive in a changing world.

“Kids can adapt to a new school, but it’s probably most scary for the new parent: ‘What are the other parents like? Will I fit in? What if I don’t make friends?’ As parents here we change and open up over the years because ‘at Lewes New School, I can be myself.'”
