Preparing portfolios for parent consultations this week was both an enjoyable and valuable experience. Sitting with each child individually while they chose their favourite pieces of work and reflected on their
learning was invaluable. Personally it was a wonderful experience for me.
The dialogue between teacher and pupil at this time can be very revealing. It has been a great opportunity for each child to see their own progress right before their eyes, affirming their learning in a very concrete way. Celebrating each treasured piece of work whilst pasting it into the portfolio was
a very positive experience.
This process of using the portfolios for self-reflection tips the power balance in a way that offers children ownership of what is valued. The teacher respects the choices made by the child with regard to the work selected and through this process has the privileged opportunity of observing the child’s internal world.
The impact of this process on the child’s sense of self is very affirming, as the child is truly listened to and understood. What a child does in cooperation one day he/she can do alone the next, and so this process of self-reflection is set in motion.

It is so encouraging to hear that this form of assessment takes place. I applaud the Lewes New School for empowering their students to take responsibility for their learning. I sincerely believe that it will encourage them to grow up into responsible adults - people that take responsibility for their actions. In a school that promotes self awareness, I actually couldn’t imagine the pupils being assessed in any other way!
