“In my old school I didn’t really get picked for much because there were so many people and they were all so competitive. They chose the people that they thought were really strong and sporty but you let us all have a go and encouraged lots of people to join in.” Lily
At Lewes New School we embrace the spirit of competitive sports, but prioritise participation over the end result. We don’t select teams, but give all children the chance to take part if they choose.
PE is an integral part of the curriculum for children throughout the school and nursery, and sports are popular after school activities. Our football club is run in conjunction with another small local primary. Older children are able to take part in a broad range local inter-school events, including cross country, football, tennis, athletics and netball events.
During the first half of the summer term, children in Later Years have weekly swimming lessons at Lewes Leisure Centre.
Lewes New School is also just round the corner from the Pells Pool, a historic lido. Most afternoons in the Summer after school you will find many of the children heading over to the pool for a refreshing dip.
Lewes has a vibrant sporting scene, and many of the children are also members of local sporting clubs, such as rugby, swimming, tennis, hockey and athletics.
Years 5 and 6 are encouraged to take their ‘Cycling Proficiency Test’, which is a 5 day course of skills and assessment which takes place at the school every two years.
