Who we are

Lewes New School is a small independent primary and nursery for children aged between 3 to 11 years.  We offer education on a human scale, where children can feel safe and be themselves and where relationships are valued and nurtured in a culture of mutual respect.

Our mission is to foster curious, compassionate and happy children who have a passion for learning and the courage and skills to shape a humane and sustainable world.

Situated in a peaceful corner of Lewes known as ‘The Pells’, Lewes New School is well placed to inspire an urge to explore and discover. Lewes itself, with its historic buildings and vibrant cultural life, provides endless opportunities for learning; and we are fortunate to have a wetlands nature reserve, historic lido and the beautiful South Downs Natural Park on our doorstep.

We were founded by a group of parents in 2000 with just 12 children, and have grown to around 70 children today. Our founders were inspired by a range of sources, in particular the approach developed by the schools of Reggio Emilia.  We continue to seek inspiration from the very best examples of educational theory and practice.

The school attracts families who believe that a new approach to education is possible. We have created a stimulating and nurturing educational environment where community is paramount and people treat each other with kindness and compassion.

Around half our families live locally in Lewes, the rest travel in from Brighton & Hove and the surrounding villages.

We are proud to be affiliated to the Guerrand-Hermès Foundation for Peace.
